And now for some fun & games...

And cookies!

Well, actually, one really BIG cookie. And very tasty cookie, too.

Today we're all at my mom's house watching the Big Game (college football is KING around here anyway, and OU vs. Texas is the king of college football games) and we always make a giant OU cookie to celebrate it.

The big game!

Okay, so the game result wasn't QUITE what we would've wanted... although it was not as bad as it could've been... but we had a nice time nonetheless.

I brought the yummy Pumpkin Dip stuff that I posted about the other day:

I added a lot of red food coloring, but that burnt-orange pumpkin stain is difficult to remove once it's present. [sigh] I did my best.

I also made a bowl of guacamole... but by the time I got a photo of it, it was almost gone:

I put six avocadoes in this batch, plus some cumin, fresh garlic, fresh onion, tomato, cilantro, lime, salt, and Cholula hot sauce. That's it.

I love guacamole! Rick went to a lot of trouble hunting down ripe avocadoes for this batch, even though he wasn't going to get to enjoy it because he was feeling sicky-sick and stayed home. So I made sure there was a little left over and I brought it home to him. Don't know if he's even going to be able to consume it, but I was thinking of him anyway.

Being sick is no fun. I actually pushed it a little too hard today, really... I am exhausted just from the drive down there and back. But it was fun anyway, and one hates to dispense with tradition unless it's absolutely necessary. We knew Pop and Mom wouldn't be able to celebrate with us, so we felt a renewed sense of urgency to keep up the normalcy of how things go in this family.

Miss Ava was quite fond of the gingersnaps (wearing them AND eating them):

And we made the traditional Giant OU Cookie:

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh-YOU!! We love our Sooners!!

I hate the national sports commentators

Why does it seem like whenever ESPN carries an OU game, the commentators spend the game hatin' on my Sooners?!?

I feel sick to my stomach over my boy Sam Bradford's sprained shoulder, but this little redshirt Landry Jones from New Mexico is stepping up. Good kid. Needs to lose the pencil mustache, but if he pulls this game out, I could learn to love the look.

Really?

Woke up this morning and let the animals out back for their morning bathroom break, and was stunned to see SNOW on the back deck. This isn't supposed to happen after Spring Break, is it? I should lodge a complaint with the department in charge of such things.

Yes, the moisture is a welcome thing, but does it have to be frozen?

I'm just askin'.

Today I will be out of pocket most of the day. This morning I get a haircut (had to forego the color job this time around, no money) and this afternoon I am going up to Okra-Homa for a wedding of a distant relative-of-a-relative who might as well be an actual relative because I've known her my whole life and thought of her as an Aunty. Any-hoo, her husband of many years passed away a while back and she is getting re-married, so lots of The Fam is coming together to celebrate with her.

The roads are clear down thisaway, and I don't expect the Okra-Homa section to be a problem by this afternoon when I'm up thataway.

Can you tell I've been listening to a Jerry Clower CD? heh

"One of us has got to have some relief!" Yeah, that Jerry Clower. What a delightful man he was. My kids absolutely collapse in fits of laughter in the back seat of the van when we play his CD.

Oh... and by the way... BOOMER SOONER!! Elite Eight, here we come!!

Gameblogging

Why? Because I'm watching the game and surfing at the same time, and because I can't fast-forward through the commercials, so I have to do SOMETHING with my hands to keep from going absolutely bonkers.

================================

7:15PM -- Sooners win the toss! Boomer Sooner!

7:45PM -- Great first down by Gresham!! I would've blogged that interception we just took from Timmeh Tebow, but my internet connection fritzed momentarily. HOLY COW I love Gresham, what a terrific reception!! Oh pooh, there's a flag... growl, holding on Robinson, that's his second in about five minutes. Dude needs to settle down.

Momentary rant: Why does it seem like every stinkin' play-by-play announcer hates the Sooners? Hunh? I'm sick of it, I swear I am.

Direct quote just now:
--The PASSION, the FIRE of TIM TEBOW, who is the unquestioned GREATEST LEADER IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL TODAY. What an unbelievable player, and an even more impressive young man.

--And that play wasn't just a first down run, that's an energy play for Florida because the fans of Florida LOVE to see Number 15 in the open field, and as you described, when he lowered the shoulder and ran over the d-back for an additional couple of yards, THAT'S Florida Gator football, and it brings the crowd into it for them.

--Y'know, in such a cynical, sarcastic society, oftentimes looking for the negative on anybody and anything, if you're fortunate enough to spend five minutes or twenty minutes around Tim Tebow, YOUR life [breathless pause] is better for it.

Can we gush just a little bit more? For one thing, the Heisman this year went to THE OTHER QB in this game... "Greatest Leader In College Football Today" eh? I know Tebow's a great guy, but really?

8:15PM -- Can someone please remind me why I had children? I just missed BOTH TOUCHDOWNS because I had to put the kids to bed. Sheesh. They're old enough to put themselves to bed, aren't they? But NOOOOOO, when Mom wants very badly to watch a stinkin' football game, we have to have ginormous emotional crisis moments.

8:20PM -- "Excessive Celebration?" I know this one went in our favor, but geesh, people, lighten up. Let 'em celebrate.

8:24PM -- INTERCEPTION!!!! That's number two, peeps. My man Gerald McCoy snagged it.

8:27PM -- They should NOT have stopped us twice in a row that close to the goal line. Where is our line?

8:48PM -- Okay, that's TWICE we've gotten inside the five yard line and been stopped. [swear words deleted]

Half Time. Dang, my bladder is screaming.

9:20PM -- The announcers finally said something good about Sam Bradford, as they marveled at his precision even on a long pass. Thought I'd better mark it down, since it may not happen again.

9:43PM -- Grrrrrrrr. Florida TD. I agree, Aunty Susan, this game is stressing ME out, too. Sheesh. I don't smoke, but I think I might need a cigarette or something.

9:49PM -- Blocked punt. We have GOT to get our groove back, and FAST.

10:06PM -- TOUCHDOWN!!! YESSSS!!! That was a terrific drive, with tons of momentum. Yay!! Tie game!! C'mon, defense!!!! Hold 'em hard and intercept that ball quick!!

10:23PM -- NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO we did not need to turn over the ball right then! Gah! I am going to gnaw my fingertips clean off.

10:34PM -- TD Gators. Three minutes left in the game. I think I'm going to throw up now. Don't comfort me, I do NOT want to hear it. This is the last time I wear my white Sooners shirt, though, because the only other time I've worn it was when we lost to tee-yew. We lost that game by ten points, too.

It's going in the garbage. I may set fire to it. No, on second thought, I may stuff it like a pillow or something. I certainly won't ever WEAR it again, though. I just can't bring myself to throw away something that has my Sooners on the front of it.

[kicking the floor, hard]

[thinking swear words]

[lots and lots of them]

[but not saying them]

Tonight... we're ready... to RUMBLLLLLLLLLLE!

Let's go, Sooners!!!

BOOMER SOONER!

Oklahoma 62 Mizzou 21

Any more questions? 'Cuz if I have to hear Brent Mustardburger boo-hooing about the Longhorns one more time I'm going to reach through the tee-vee and stick a pacifier in his poor widdle mouth.

OU vs. TX gameday

It's a barn-burner of a game. Can't stay online long... must return to couch and consume chips and dip and scream at the refs.

UPDATE: Well, that was painful. I guess there's always next year. Congrats, Prochein Amy!

I've been fraternizing with the enemy...

My pal Prochein Amy is a terrific gal, despite being one of those University of Texas Longhorn types. A few weeks ago she asked me to do a guest post over at her place to get the whole OU/TX weekend thing going. As she was gracious enough to post mine in its entirety without snarky commentary, I shall afford her the same respect.

Hello from Amy, she who does not speak of college loyalties with Kris, except for now. Kris guest posted on my blog about OU. I wanted a different viewpoint on my usual pregame summary of our opposing team. She has asked me to guest post in return.

The Texas mascot is the longhorn cattle, which are tough and strong. We are currently on our 14th Bevo., who has been our official mascot since the end of 2006. Bevo is present at all home games, a few away games, and he will be at the Red River Shootout on Saturday.

Based on the longhorn, the Texas fans show support with the "Hook'em Horns" hand sign that looks like the longhorns horns. Fingers are stretched wide to avoid being confused with the sign of the devil. (tehe)

Burnt orange and white are Texas colors, with the original color being bright orange. Since orange tends to fade, burnt orange was selects. During WWII the cost of dyes went up, so it was back to bright orange. Daryl Royal brought back the burnt orange in 60s, but Mack Brown brought it back to life. Before Mack pushed the true burnt orange and encouraged fans to "Come Early...Be Loud...Stay Late...Wear Orange!", most people leaned towards the white. I look good in burnt orange, so no complaints here!

Texas's oldest rival is the A&M Aggies, but now they are more like an annoyance. In more recent history, OU has been the bane of our existence. Kris explained about the Red River Shootout on my blog. It is unique to be in a neutral site and it tends to give a more even playing field. The stadium is split at the 50 yard line, with half going to each side. It is amazing to see the crimson/burnt orange line down the middle. Also as Kris mentioned, this game can have unexpected outcomes. I have mixed emotions about going to this game since the walk back to the car is even longer when you have lost.

I did not attend the University of Texas, but my husband did. He has been a fan since he was 4 years old and can remember listening to the games on the radio. What initially "hooked" me most is the traditions surrounding the game. The band, the cheers, the songs, the spirit and all the traditions. Over time, I have grown to love the game of football itself. So technically, you could say I am really a fan of Texas Football, but I get excited when Texas excels in other areas. Which they tend to do quite a bit.

The game this Saturday will be very interesting since OU is ranked #1 and Texas is #5. Both teams have great quarterbacks. The spread is only one touchdown in OU's favor. Not much of a spread, so even the Vegas bookies know it will be close.

Thanks to Kris for equal time and for not holding my Texas loyalties against me. I love reading her blog and can easily get past her crazy OU-ness.

BOOMer Sooner!

I don't gloat much over a Sooner victory over TCU because of my sister's divided loyalties... but I despise Baylor and am delighted to note that OU is seriously dismantling them at this very moment in Waco. It's already 21-0 in the first quarter and OU is inside the five yard line nearing another score.

Touchdown OU. AGAIN. Forty-one seconds left in the first quarter.

UPDATE: 35-14 at the half. A couple of weird calls from the refs, but as lopsided as this game is, I don't think I mind very much.

Juaquin Iglesias is spectacular, and have I mentioned that I am crushing on QB Sam Bradford? What a cutie -- in that Tony Romo and Michael Phelps sort of way.

UPDATE: 42-14 with 11:42 left in the third quarter.

UPDATE: I decided I wasn't worried, so I went to take a nap. Final is 49-17. Smackdown.

Sooners versus the Purple Horned-Frogs

I won't spend a great deal of time gloating over this one, out of respect for my favorite little sister who graduated from TCU, but...

BOOMer Sooner!!!

Saturdays in the fall are always Party Days at MamaSue & Poppi's house, where as many of us as possible gather to cheer on our team:

I think I chewed off several fingernails during this one, but it's high time we Okies won the Red River Rivalry again. Sam Bradford was spectacular as the OU QB; hard to imagine the kid's only 19. I hope he has a long and successful NFL career someday.

Saturday, September 29, 2007

Ugh.

Well that was humiliating. I'm not sure who that team was; they were wearing OU jerseys and helmets but I'm pretty sure they were impersonators.

Pathetic.

Well, at least I can take consolation in this. And this.

Tomorrow's agenda

I plan to be parked in front of my parents' wide-screen TV tomorrow at about 12:30 PM. It's pretty much the only TV I have time to watch these days, if you want to know the truth. I don't think I've even watched FOX News in a week or two, and The Closer finished its season a couple of weeks ago.

And what, pray tell, will I be watching tomorrow at lunchtime?

You even have to ask?

[snicker snicker]

Got this e-mailed joke (an oldie but a goodie, of course) from my Crazy Uncle Carroll tonight:

A southern Oklahoma farmer died and, being a heathen, went to Hell.

When he got there it was 95 F with 90% humidity, but Satan noticed he was kicked back on the brimstone relaxing comfortably.

He asked, "Why aren't you miserable like everyone else here?" The farmer replied, "Oh, this is like a warm spring day in southern Oklahoma. I like it."

Angry, Satan turned up the thermostat until it was 100 F and 95% humidity. Still, the farmer was happy. "This is like a good June day on the farm. Not bad at all."

Furious, Satan turned it up to 105 F and 99% humidity. Everyone was even more miserable, except the southern Oklahoma farmer still resting.

"Hey, this is like a good August day on the farm baling hay. Feels good -- the hotter the better."

In a total rage, Satan turned the thermostat down to minus 25 F. Within seconds, the air became chilly and frost appeared, soon followed by solid ice everywhere. Satan smirked, watching the farmer.

The confused farmer looked down at the frozen ground for a moment, suddenly jumped up excitedly, looked around everywhere and began to laugh, scream, and jump for joy.

"OSU WON A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!"
