It's Hair Appointment Day!

[happy dancing]

I have my regularly-scheduled hair session with the awesomest hair artist EVAR this morning at nine a-m. I used to live in the same town with her, but she moved one direction and I moved the other... but you know, once I find someone who GETS ME and GETS MY HAIR (plus is just plain fabulous and hilarious) and who is a real artist, I don't want to make a switch. So I drive an hour to her salon every eight to ten weeks. It's worth it.

Catch y'all later.

The hair

I'm not accustomed to fixing it yet, so it doesn't look too wonderful, but I love the color that Mary put on it. The main base color is a nice rich brown, and there are occasional blonde and then purplish-red highlights intermingled in it:

As a girl who's been doing the red-head thing for quite a while now, it's a nice change. I like it. It's a lot shorter than I usually go, too.

Haircut Saturday

While we were all there last Saturday, Mom got out the clippers and trimmed up Isaac's hair, then turned her focus to my brudder-in-law, Brino. Talk about trusting your mother-in-law! It ended up looking pretty decent, too.

I have been cutting Rick's hair myself for well past a decade now. While we still lived in our hometown, he went to the same barber he'd always gone to since he was small. After we moved to Iowa, however, he bought some clippers and told me it was now my job. So I learned how.

I refuse to cut Martha's hair; she gets hostile if something isn't to her liking, and she seems to enjoy whacking on it herself, so why get in the way of that? The only one (besides me) who gets professional trims is Alice, because she's got such straight, thick, Asian hair -- it's very unforgiving. Even the professionals usually get it wrong; I haven't found very many folks who can do a good job on hers.

Hair...

I am pretty seriously thinking of going Halle-Berry or Victoria-Beckham short with my hairstyle. I've always been afraid to go super-short because I (1)didn't want to look like a man and (2)felt that it would look unbalanced because of my weight issues.

Now that the weight issues aren't there, I'm giving it some consideration.

But the whole looking-like-a-man thing, I'm still a little worried about that. I've met some pretty seriously butchy women and absolutely do NOT want to go down THAT road. I'm a girl... I like being a girl... I like looking like a girl. But Halle and Posh don't look at all butchy.

Therein lies the problem: Halle and Posh have figures (bought and well-paid for, but figures nonetheless). I got no boobs and no acetol.

I guess I'll keep my hair a little longer for a little longer. Until I muster up the courage, that is. I really want to do it. And hair does grow; if I hate it, it will grow out eventually and I won't have to live with it.

Decisions. [sigh]

My little X-Man

When he gets out of the shower, Isaac likes to style his hair like Wolverine.

I'm especially fond of this photograph because it really seems to capture the soulfulness and unusual coloration of his eyes. He really has lovely, lovely eyes.

I'm not biased.

Hair Is Not A Moral Issue

Pink locks get Michigan girl locked out of school

When the kids and I moved back to Texas in the summer of 2006 and I took a teaching position in a rural north Texas school district, I remember being completely dumbfounded to discover that the school actually required boys to CUT THEIR HAIR. Hunh?

Not only did they have to maintain their hair in a prescribed manner, the school restricted all students from using any artificial hair coloring that wasn't a "natural" color. Boys also could not wear braids or cornrows.

No male student could have a piercing of any kind. Girls could only have two piercings on each ear, no more.

WTF?

I had just taught in an urban school district where we were just glad the students showed up to school every day. Hair and piercings weren't high on our list of stuff to get worried about. Certain types of clothing, yes -- particularly those which were overly revealing or which declared allegiances to gangs -- but hair? And an earring? Puh-leeze.

When you grow up and get a job, you have to have your hair a certain way according to your boss' preference and your clientele. As a high school kid, though, why can't you have a little fun and experiment with hair color? Who cares if your hair is blue today? What does that do to detract from your educational experience? Sure, the first one who does it will be a distraction, but in a very short time no-one will notice or care.

And how the HECK does it change things for a boy to have long hair? That one is a major mystery to me.

I need to research and see what the dress codes for some of the larger districts around here are. This is the most ridiculous thing I've found about this place (which I love -- don't get me wrong -- this is the best place EVAR) and I hope that someday people can just learn to get over it.

My haircut

Trying to arrange a brand-new hairdo on the morning after you get it cut -- IMPOSSIBLE. It doesn't look even a little bit like she fixed it yesterday!! I know, I know... I just need some time to get used to it. I do like it, and it feels SO much better than the jagged, bedraggled curls I've been sporting of late, but I still don't have a routine of how to fix it. It's all pretty much back to my natural color, along with all the new silvery wires mingling among the browns. My color appointment isn't until April 10.

I feel lighter, somehow

Must be the haircut.

I couldn't get any decent pix of myself tonight, so I'll see if any of my students can take a decent one tomorrow. Unless I find that I am unable to style it in the morning, in which case I will conveniently forget my camera at home.

I can't believe I just bought a flatiron. This is so unlike me.
