Lebanese farmer grows super-sized spud

A farmer from Lebanon couldn't believe his eyes when he discovered he had grown a prize-winning potato on his land, he told AFP on Saturday, saying he was hoping to enter the Guinness World Records.

"This giant weighs 11.3 kilos (24.9 pounds)," Khalil Semhat said at his farm in the Tyre area, 85 kilometres (50 miles) south of Beirut.

"I've been working the land since I was a boy, and it's the first time I've seen anything like it."

Semhat, 56, said he had not done anything special to cultivate such a super-sized spud. "I didn't use any chemicals at all," he insisted, adding that he had to ask a friend to help him haul the huge tuber out of the ground.

Winning caption: In today's anti-violence, anti-trans-fat society, many of the classic sumo houses have been forced to shut their doors due to declining membership. A few, though, have managed to stay active by offering a variety of sumo alternatives. One such activity, the "Daddy-n-Me Gangsta Smack-Talk Class" continues to gain popularity in sumo houses across the country.

Caption Contest

I haven't had a caption contest in quite some time, and I thought this photo was just begging for one. The actual caption from Agence France-Presse says that they're university sumo students and they're participating in the Baby-Cry Sumo at a local Buddhist temple. Apparently the goal is to get the babies to cry, and that somehow brings good health.


The winner will receive a small original watercolor painting by me. :) Contest closes on Wednesday evening at midnight, and the winner will be announced on Friday morning.

Earlier in the week I posted this photo and announced a Caption Contest. I received a generous number of hilarious submissions, and choosing the winner proved to be beyond my individual capabilities, so I chose some highly qualified judges to help me.
