Family portraits, homeward journey

Thought you'd enjoy a couple of pix of me, my little sis and my little mommy:

As you can see, my little sis got the looks in the family. Blue eyes, naturally-curly red hair... with brains under those curls... plus she's everything I'm not -- responsible, neat-as-a-pin, organized, helpful, thoughtful, funny...

And here's the three of us (Bethy, Mommy and me):

Would you believe that my little Mommy had a heart transplant just over a year ago? She looks awesome. She IS awesome.

Saturday morning we loaded up the Toyota mini-van and headed north. As promised, here are a couple of snaps of the grass-fire damage we saw as we drove through Oklahoma:

We didn't see any active ones on the way back, although the smell still hung heavy in the air throughout southern Oklahoma.

In Oklahoma City we stopped at Braum's and met my Uncle Randy, Aunt Lisa and cousin Miranda. Randy had on his usual OU crimson-and-cream attire, and as we were ordering, a very large group of people wearing that ghastly OSU neon-orange color came in. I began to wonder if we were in the wrong place!! Thankfully they weren't too hostile; they were on their way to a basketball game at Stillwater.

A little later, while stopped at a convenience store in northern Oklahoma, Isaac spotted a spiffy OU ballcap and I bought it for him. I also found a large tankard that I can use to take my Ice-and-Pepsi with me to school, emblazoned brilliantly with the OU logo.

And then there was Kansas.

This is Kansas.

And this is your brain on Kansas:

DOES THIS PLACE EVER END?????

Okay, we did eventually get through that endless place. I never thought I'd be so glad to see Kansas City.

Finally back in Des Moines, we drove straight to a friend's house where they were having a New Year's Eve party /slash/ Rick's birthday party celebration. We played cards and ate pizza and all kinds of other assorted yummies. We didn't stay all the way 'til midnight, however, because we were just too pooped-out.

This morning I played with the band for worship; we only had one service instead of the usual two. It was good to be back playing again. Rick still has a terrible cough and decided to forego the service. I may move to the couch tonight so I can get some sleep.

We don't start back to school until Wednesday, but I may go back up to school tomorrow and Tuesday just to try to get a few things done at my desk before the students return.

Doesn't that sound like an interesting, glamorous life?

Happy New Year.
