Rudeness

Scenario #1

The woman in the picture on the left is a sales clerk in an upscale department store. You wear a size 6. You approach her and ask her where the "normal" sizes are and call her a "fat cow." You expect her to continue to treat you with the respect that is due a responsible customer.

Scenario #2

The woman in the picture at the right is a sales clerk in an upscale department store. You wear a size 12. You approach her and ask her where the "real woman" sizes are and call her a "meat stick." You expect her to continue to treat you with the respect that is due a responsible customer.

Why is the first scenario considered rude, but the second one widely accepted? Is it because our society tends to "reward" those on the thinner end of the wedge, therefore it's incumbent on non-thin people to punish them? Or is "meat stick" somehow considered to be a compliment?

The second scenario just happened to my best friend. If I weren't seven hundred miles away from her, I'd march over to the store right now and throttle the scummy individual who felt it her right to hurt her. I'd do that, but I have to say that it is a far more common experience for her than you might imagine.

Makes me mad.
