RICHMOND, Va. -- Family members say a brain-dead Virginia woman has given birth to a baby girl.
Susan Torres has been kept alive on life support since May so that her unborn baby could grow.
The word comes via e-mail from the woman's brother-in-law, who wrote that the baby is named Susan for her mother and that there were no complications during the delivery. Baby Susan weighs just under 2 pounds and is 13.5 inches long.
The mother was diagnosed with melanoma that spread to her brain. She suffered a stroke in May, and doctors said her brain function ended. Her husband had quit his job to stay by his wife's side.
The baby is in neonatal intensive care at the Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington.
