I managed to make it through, what, TEN weeks of school without contracting some kind of disease... but my luck has run out. I'm bleary-eyed and my doze is stopped up. I meant to say "nose" but I can't.
I love my students, but it's amazing to me how pervasive the "everybody owes me -- I'm a victim" mentality really is. It's just an attitude everybody takes for granted, I guess. One of my neighbor teachers showed a video dealing with people who take advantage of the welfare system, and instead of "getting it", the students actually railed against it and said that the government OUGHT to pay up and stay out of people's lives. I'm sorry -- it just can't work that way. I hope I can possibly make an inroad into that world and perhaps subtly begin to dispel that mentality. I need to think of an activity that would demonstrate this idea in a real way... I think I'll Google it and see if somebody else has already beaten me to it.
