As I was driving to band rehearsal this afternoon, I was admiring the lush patches of light-red "paintbrush" flowers. Suddenly I spotted a clump of something that was a brilliant scarlet, much larger and brighter than the paintbrushes. I stopped the van and got out to snap a photo of it, and was surprised to find what appeared to be another cultivar or type of paintbrush flower that I'd never seen before:
I could be wrong, of course, but this isolated little clump sure did look like it belonged in the Castelleja family... I'm certain it's NOT the usual "Indian paintbrush" flower I'm accustomed to seeing, but I don't know what its own Latin moniker would be. Still, I thought it was an outstanding beauty. Don't you?
