Didn't have internet service all weekend... very frustrating. Thanks to Blue Fish, it's back up and running. He and his family are probably going to have to move in next door just to keep up with all my tech support issues.
Yesterday started out to be a pretty crummy day... well, actually, the crumminess had settled squarely in on Friday evening. Nothing earth-shaking, just battling some depression and a few needling reminders of things I wish I didn't know. But it colored my morning on Saturday. I did have one thing to look forward to, however. Of course, you knew it would have to do with church and music, right? You guessed it.
I've been playing in the Sunday morning band, and as you know, I absolutely love it. It's wonderful... Jeff is a very gifted worship leader, and it's a pleasure to be an instrumentalist working with him. The others who rotate in are also all extremely gifted, and the church's sound system is state-of-the-art (with truly awesome sound techs working the booth as well) which makes it all sound just fantastic. The Sunday morning band plays for both the 8:30 and 10:30 services.
Sunday night services are played by a band called "Soulfire", and it's geared more directly toward youth. They're also quite good and, like Jeff, they write some of their own songs as well as doing covers of current worship songs. Well, last Sunday the Soulfire guys asked me if I'd consider adding a few keyboard licks here and there, and I nearly fell over myself to say yes. They practice on Saturday afternoons, which is perfect because Rick is home with the kids and I don't have to worry about a babysitter.
So this past Saturday was going to be my first Soulfire rehearsal, and I was beside myself with anticipation. The truth? I couldn't really bring myself to believe that they had actually asked me to come, so I showed up an hour earlier and practiced some of my other music so that if they came and wondered why I was there, I could at least say that I had come to practice, and that I'd clear out so they could rehearse. Well, they really HAD invited me, so I stayed and rehearsed with them. It sounded so good I could hardly believe it, and they were really enthusiastic about my contributions. I tell you, it made my day. I still had some of my crappy stuff to deal with, but it wasn't as hard.
This morning sounded really, really good too. There were two fairly keyboard-heavy songs I was supposed to carry, and I didn't screw either of them up too badly, so it was a good day. hehe
Tonight the church had a Super Bowl party. I came and brought some hot dogs, and did a shift in the nursery just to help out a little. They had a big-screen TV and also had it patched in to the main projector. During halftime, we took no chances on anyone having a wardrobe malfunction; instead, we played a DVD of Joe Gibbs giving a faith story, which was very nicely done, and the pastor gave a presentation of the gospel. Then they gave away about a zillion door prizes. The one thing I would've changed would be that there would be some way they could bleep out the commercials... I guess I could deal with most of them, but when the Cialis commercial came on AT MY CHURCH, I just felt a bit, um, awkward. Thankfully most people were milling around, playing basketball and being generally noisy, so there probably wasn't a ton of folks who were paying attention to that commercial, but I still could've done without it.
Ugh, I'm really sleepy. Think about me tomorrow, okay? Especially around about 1:00 PM. That's when I'm going to have my second classroom observation and evaluation. I probably won't blog again until after that's over. Then you'll get one of those "relief -- it's over" kinds of posts.
